If you’re looking to make your home more comfortable and energy efficient, few investments will stretch your dollar further than investing in insulation. Insulation helps keep valuable heat inside your home during those long winter months and unwanted heat out during those surprisingly hot summer months.
Attic insulation is especially important because heat has a natural tendency to rise. When your attic is properly air sealed and insulated, rising heat will not escape into your attic during the winter, and heat will not accumulate on the second floor of your home during the summer.
The Most Effective Types of Insulation for Attics
If you caught our blog post from a few months back where we discussed Which Type of Insulation Is Best?, then you probably know a thing or two about the most effective types of insulation for keeping your home comfortable and efficient. Spray foam, for example, is great for air sealing and high humidity applications (such as in the crawlspace), while mineral wool and fiberglass offer impressive soundproofing for interior walls. Blown-in cellulose, on the other hand, can be densely packed or applied as a loose fill, making it great for finished walls and open spaces alike.
But which types of insulation is best for the attic? At Vermont Foam Insulation, we most often recommend spray foam and cellulose.
Spray Foam
Spray foam is one of the most effective types of insulation on the market, with an R value (effectiveness rating for resisting the transfer of heat) of R6.2 or higher. (The spray foam we install is made from renewable materials and has an R value of R7.5!) We use spray foam in the attic to seal air leaks in key areas such as around recessed lighting and the attic hatch. If the attic will become a finished space, we will apply spray foam to the roof slope above.
Cellulose
Blown-in cellulose is made from recycled newspaper which has been treated to resist mold, pests, and fire, making it an eco-friendly insulation option. We install cellulose in loose fill form over the attic floor when the attic will remain an unfinished space.
The Benefits of a Properly Insulated Attic
Many homeowners in southern Vermont and southwestern New Hampshire underestimate the power of proper attic insulation. When your attic is sealed and insulated with the right materials, you can expect:
-
A warmer home in the winter
-
A cooler home in the summer
-
More stable indoor temperatures
-
Greater energy efficiency
-
Lower heating and cooling costs
-
Fewer indoor drafts
-
Prevention of ice dams on the roof
